Tradition refers to populations of the <a title=\"Lelegi\" href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lelegi\">lelegi<\/a> and then of <a title=\"Ancient Egypt\" href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antico_Egitto\">Egyptians,<\/a> <a title=\"phoenixes\" href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fenici\">Phoenicians<\/a> and <a title=\"Minoan civilization\" href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Civilt%C3%A0_minoica\">Cretans.<\/a> <a title=\"Archeology\" href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Archeologia\">Archaeological remains<\/a> indicate that the island was inhabited by ancient <a title=\"Ionia\" href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ionia\">Ionian<\/a> peoples as early as the early part of the <a title=\"11th century BC\" href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/XI_secolo_a.C.\">11th century BC<\/a>.
